Reclaiming Our Rights, Shaping Our Future
This event will be held in english and will be livestreamed. The event is free. For physical attendance, registration is required.
In Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria, women have led movements for freedom under regimes that systematically deny their rights. After the killing of Mahsa Jina Amini in September 2022, women in Iran sparked the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising—an act of defiance that continues today through daily resistance to compulsory veiling. Women of Afghanistan, facing complete erasure under the Taliban, continue to organize across borders to demand accountability. In Syria, women who resisted dictatorship for decades are now navigating return and rebuilding in a post-Assad landscape, confronting new forms of marginalization.
At this event, prominent women’s rights activists from all three countries will share their lived experiences and political insights. Through individual talks, a panel discussion, and audience Q&A, they will explore how systems of exclusion operate—and how women are advancing a unified human rights vision.
You will meet:
Metra Mehran, Policy advisor to the End Gender Apartheid campaign
Azam Jangravi, ”Woman, Life, Freedom” Activist, Iran
Zaina Erhaim, Gender Expert and Journalist, Syria
About Oslo Women’s Rights Initiative (OWRI)
OWRI is a network of women leaders united around the core principles of universal human rights and equity. The network consists of women from countries facing extreme gender inequality and those who support their advocacy efforts for lasting, sustainable global social change. The OWRI has hosted an annual event in Oslo since 2018 in partnership with the Nobel Peace Center, Civita, Fritt Ord, and the Grieg Foundation to platform the voices and perspectives of network members while providing them with a safe and supportive space to connect, collaborate, and grow. This event is part of their fourth annual meeting.
