On January 28, the Doomsday Clock will be set for 2025. The Doomsday Clock is a metaphor for how close humanity is to self-annihilation, and it serves as a call-to-action to find solutions to the world’s most urgent, man-made existential threats in order to move the hands of the Clock away from midnight. The Doomsday Clock considers risk in three main areas: nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies.

The time is set in January every year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board (SASB) in consultation with its Board of Sponsors, which includes nine Nobel Laureates. In January 2024, the Doomsday Clock was reset at 90 seconds to midnight, the same position as in 2023 and the closest to midnight the Clock had ever been.

Will the Doomsday Clock move even closer to midnight in 2025? We will have the answer on 28 January. The next day, Wednesday 29 January, the Nobel Peace Center and No to Nuclear Weapons invite you to a conversation about the Doomsday Clock and the current nuclear threat.

Jon Wolfsthal, who is a member of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists’ Science and Security Board will join the event virtually and give remarks about the update to the Doomsday Clock.

The talk will be followed by a live conversation from the stage at the Nobel Peace Center. Panelists to be announced soon.

This event is a part of Wednesday Late at the museum, and the event is included in the ticket. Exhibitions are open until 20.00. Welcome!

The event will be English.
