UN Security Council

The UN Security Council is the UN's executive body, and has the task of preventing armed conflict from breaking out between the member states. The Security Council may try to resolve conflicts through negotiations, by adopting sanctions or by the use of military force. The Security Council consists of the permanent members China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, in addition to ten member countries elected for a two-year term. Norway has been a member of the Security Council several times: In 1949/50, 1963/64, 1979/80 and 2001/02.

"Norway must use its seat in the Security Council to build trust between peoples and countries, to listen and understand. We will fight against poverty, work to protect children and secure women's roles and participation in international peace- and security work. In addition, we will work to ensure that the Security Council, to a greater extent, looks at how climate change affects peace and security. "
