The Nobel system

«The adjudication needed for the award of the Peace Prize shall be carried out by the committee of the Norwegian Storting referred to in the will, known as the Norwegian Nobel Committee». (Statutes of the Nobel Foundation, § 6)

The Nobel Foundation, a private institution established in 1900, has ultimate responsibility for fulfilling the intentions in Alfred Nobel’s will. The main mission of the Nobel Foundation is to manage Alfred Nobel’s fortune.

The Nobel Prize Museum’s aim is to spread knowledge and create interest and discussion around the natural sciences and culture through creative learning, exhibition techniques and modern technology.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is responsible for selecting the Nobel Laureates in Chemistry. By the terms of Alfred Nobel’s will the Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1901.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet is responsible for selecting the Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine. By the terms of Alfred Nobel’s will the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet since 1901.

The Swedish Academy is responsible for choosing the Nobel Laureates in Literature. By the terms of Alfred Nobel’s will the Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded by the Swedish Academy since 1901.
